Still I Rise

>> Saturday, August 11, 2007

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops.

Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don't you take it awful hard

'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines

Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I've got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame

I rise

Up from a past that's rooted in pain

I rise

I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.

I feel that this work by Angelou is worthy of praise, because of the weight and distribution of self-confidence it could potentially instill within a reader through reference, should they need encouragement. I think that some may also look at this piece and reflect back upon struggles, and compare 'then with now'. Regardless, this is highly motivational, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Thank you for this post.

Hello Mirage! ;)

Thanks for your nice comment. Yes, it is *very* encouraging and motivational. It's interesting, I had just posted a different quote from Maya on a Forum I frequent, which is typical for me to often post quotes. When going back several hours later, I was taken back by the amount of responses...both Funny and Inspirational from many other posters. It was nice to see so many people add their own thoughts, inspirational or otherwise.

I may post that quote on my blog as well. hmmmm.

and your comment about you checking where your thighs meet???

*fights strong urge to be very, VERY naughty! ;)~~

Summit of Mount Jo 9/24/10 A few friends were worried about me. They were worried about me hiking Mount Jo by myself, so I took this video to show how many people were around that day if I needed assistance. I even chatted with several and had a few people share a glass of wine with me at the summit. :) Mount Jo. 9/24/10 After the crowd left This is what the summit looked like... with no people on it. In the previous video I took, I showed all the people who had made this same hike to her summit.
